Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that is caused by the tissue at the back of your throat relaxing and blocking your airway throughout the night while you sleep. Instead of breathing regularly throughout the night, your breathing can stop and start many times during the night.

The Effects of Sleep Apnea

When your airway is blocked, it prevents oxygen from reaching your vital organs, including your brain and heart. The lack of airflow can cause impairment of your vital organs and lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart disease, memory issues, diabetes, and other serious diseases.

Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

  • Deep, loud snoring is a main sign of sleep apnea
  • Suddenly waking with a gasping or choking feeling
  • Feeling groggy or sleepy during the day
  • Waking with a sore throat and headache most mornings

Treatment for Sleep Apnea

The first stage of treatment for sleep apnea is to make sure you have sleep apnea. To confirm a diagnosis of sleep apnea, your doctor may request a sleep study. Once you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, the goal of treatment is to maintain an open airway while you sleep. This can be accomplished with one of two options:

  • A CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine, is a device connected to tubing with a facepiece that fits over your mouth and nose. The device provides a steady stream of oxygen which you breathe throughout the night.
  • An oral mandibular advancement appliance is a small dental appliance you wear. The appliance holds your lower jaw in a forward position, which keeps your airway open throughout the night.

CPAP Therapy

The primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure and it’s a therapy for treating OSA along with bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP).

Mountain View Sleep Center can send a referral to your choice or an insurance preferred durable medical equipment store.

Inspire Therapy

No Mask. No Hose. Just Sleep.

Mountain View Sleep Center provides the Inspire Implant, also known as Inspire therapy.  Inspire is an alternative treatment to the CPAP machine and requires no machine and no mouthpiece. It is an FDA-approved option for patients with moderate to severe OSA who’ve struggled to tolerate CPAP and Bi-PAP treatment options.

Snoring Treatment

Did you know that over 37 million people in the United States snore on a regular basis? It’s true, according to the National Sleep Foundation. There is help. Your sleep specialist can treat your snoring.

What causes snoring?

Snoring happens because your soft palate, tongue, and throat fully relax. Your tissues begin to vibrate, causing the snoring sound. Snoring will become louder as your airway narrows.

Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea

If your tissue relaxes and collapses, it may completely block your airway while you sleep. This is known as sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder that can put you at risk of having a stroke, acquiring diabetes or heart disease, and having memory problems.

Risk factors for snoring

  • Having a low soft palate because it will narrow your airway
  • Having narrow nasal passages or a deviated septum
  • Being overweight, can cause you to have excess tissue at the back of your throat, narrowing your airway

What you can do to help minimize snoring

  • Avoid drinking alcohol before bed
  • Avoid taking sedatives before bed
  • Take a nasal decongestant before bed
  • Try to sleep on your side, not on your back

How your sleep specialist can help with snoring

Your sleep specialist may recommend a sleep study to determine whether you have a snoring problem, or whether you have sleep apnea.

After diagnosis, your sleep specialist may recommend:

  • A CPAP machine, to provide a continuous flow of oxygen while you sleep
  • An oral mandibular advancement appliance, to hold your lower jaw forward to help you maintain an open airway
  • Surgical treatment may be an option if your snoring is due to a structural problem which can be corrected with surgery.

Sleep Studies

In order to receive a proper diagnosis, you will be required to undergo a sleep study. Sleep studies can be performed in a sleep lab, or at home using a portable device.

In-Lab Sleep Study

During an in-lab sleep study, you will spend the night in a private room with private bathroom. A comprehensive sleep study is called Polysomnography. MVSC is accredited by American Academy of Sleep Medicine and provides polysomnography in-lab sleep studies that meet AASM guidelines in monitoring brain waves, oxygen levels in your blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements during the study.

At-Home Sleep Study

An at-home sleep apnea test is done right in the comfort of your home with a portable device. You will administer the test yourself without the assistance of a sleep technician. A home sleep test device is scheduled and available based on insurance requirements. A patient will be scheduled to come to the sleep center and pick up the portable device, follow instructions for the hook up at home and return the device the next day. The results are scored and reviewed by Dr. Catten with a determination to qualify for an in-lab sleep study or next step.

Quality sleep is vital to good health and well-being. Not getting enough sleep places a tremendous strain on your body and mind’s overall health. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Allergies

Getting an allergy test can help you find out what you’re allergic to, whether it’s through eating, touching, or breathing in. Allergy tests are usually skin or blood tests. Your ENT doctor will determine whether an allergy test is needed by looking at your medical history and taking an exam to see what allergies you should be tested for.

If you aren’t sure whether you’re allergic to something or not, but you start experiencing symptoms of allergy like it’s hard to breathe, you’re itchy, or you have hives, and you notice that your symptoms are not relieved by over-the-counter medications, it may be time to talk to your ENT doctor.
