FAQs

As you get older, is ringing in the ears normal?

No, ringing is not considered normal. Although, it is very common especially as people get older. The most common reason for ringing in the ears (called tinnitus) is hearing loss. Most people lose hearing as they get older so tinnitus becomes more frequent as people age. Your ENT can evaluate ringing in the ears and make recommendations for care.

Do I need a referral to see an ENT?

Most of the time, no. But it is always best to check with your insurance plan to see if a referral is required.

When should I talk with my ENT about getting my child’s tonsils removed?

If you have concerns about your child’s tonsils, your ENT is a good place to start.  There are several reasons why tonsils should be removed. One common reason to remove tonsils is for frequent infections. This is called tonsillitis. Tonsillitis can be viral or bacterial. Strep is the most common bacterial cause of tonsillitis, but it is not the only bacteria that can cause tonsillitis. If you or your child have more than 3 infections a year, a tonsillectomy should be considered.  Another reason to consider removing the tonsils is when they are so large they can cause obstructive symptoms in the throat.  These symptoms include disruptive snoring and pauses in breathing during sleep (due to throat blockage and/or sleep apnea). Also a tonsillectomy can be a good idea if a young child experiences difficulty eating due to enlarged tonsils.
